Limited Clare Valley Pinot Noir Shiraz 2017

The 2017 Antiquarian Pinot Noir Shiraz is the second release of this unique blend of Shiraz and Pinot Noir picked in our Clare vineyard. 

The Pinot hand picked, from a multi-clonal vineyard, with 9 clones across the tiny space is a very unique block.  Shiraz was machine picked and crushed on top of the Pinot. 

Hand plunged and fermented with inoculated selected yeast strain, the ferment temperature peaked at 28 degrees and the wine was on skins for a total of 15 days in the open fermenter.

Pressed off to tank, settled and racked to then mature in seasoned French oak barriques for approximately 15 months.  Very light filtration at bottling was used to retain the finesse and elegance of the fruits expression.

Colour   Deep inky crimson red showing brick edges.
Nose   Complex herbal aroma of marjoram and fennel seed.
Palate   Ethereal fine silky tannins with a bright vein of acidity  and mulberry, raspberry and dark cherry fruits. 

Inspiration came from Maurice O’Shea’s 1936 Mt Pleasant Pinot Hermitage light dry red,
though never fortunate enough to taste it, the legend of it was inspiring enough to tread humbly in its footstep
s.

The aroma is stunning and totally unexpected and so hard to describe: there's a combination of a gentle red-fruit delicacy as well as richer and dark-fruited spice, the aroma coming in waves that alternate these characteristics. On the palate, that same layered and gorgeous complexity of succulent and sumptuous red, silky fruits and a background of spicy dark fruit. Somehow you can taste these two sides to the wine even though they are completely integrated. I can't remember the last time I tasted such a fascinating and unexpected wine. And fascination is not just cerebral but also incredibly sensual. Utterly gorgeous. The tech sheet mentions mulberry and that really is a good suggestion because that too has a luscious richness with very bright acidity. It's long too with an aftertaste of sweet red cherry. The tannins are perfectly judged to support the fruit and give it shape for a good few years in bottle. (JH)
