Clare Valley Vineyards
BYRNE VINEYARDS – CLARE VALLEY
The town of Clare is situated 136km north of Adelaide and our vineyard is just 5kms from the town's main street. We are opposite South Australia's finest country racecourse in the beautiful northern end of the Clare Valley at Stanley Flat and have 36.4 hectares under vine. The Stanley Flat sub-region is the oldest grape producing area in the district and is sheltered by the rising hills of the valley.
The vines on this property were planted over 40 years ago, utilising the excellent soil profiles of this site and the underground water supply for irrigation to produce our quality vines. The varieties grown here include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Pinot Noir, Grenache, Merlot and Sangiovese. This mature vineyard delivers superb Clare Valley regional characteristics of rich and elegant flavours. White Hut Vineyard is located in the same area and is 16.5 hectares. This is fully planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz vines in the area of low hills north of Clare, at an elevation of 400 metres above sea level. The area is blessed with a climate ideal for premium grape growing and the combination of consistently good winter rains, hot summers tempered by cool nights and long ripening periods, all combine to produce grapes with exceptional character and balance.
CLARE VALLEY REGION - SOIL AND CLIMATE
The region has a total of 40km2 vines planted from 400 to 500 metres (1,300 to 1,600 ft). The climate is moderately continental, with cool to cold nights and warm to hot summer days. The higher altitude, compared to other wine regions in South Australia, ensures cool nights even during the heat of summer allowing the fruit to ripen more evenly and slowly. Rainfall is predominantly in winter - spring (June - September) with an annual average of around 630mm. Summers are dry and make irrigation desirable but also ensure a minimum of fungal diseases. Varied soild types throughout the valleys are another feature, ranging from red to brown grey over basement rock.
