Our Story

The Byrne family is dedicated to producing appealing and interesting wines of the highest quality from our home vineyards. byrne vineyards now encompasses every stage of the business of wine, from growing the grapes and making the wines through to selling the wines both domestically and overseas, and as a family we have been involved in the Australian wine industry for three generations. We continually endeavour to make our wines the very best in their respective markets and accessible to all. At the moment, we export much of our production to China, Europe, the UK, the USA, Canada, South-East Asia and New Zealand.

In 1960, Romla and Eric Byrne first purchased the Devlin's Pound property near Waikerie in South Australia. For brothers Rob and Terry Byrne, here began the family passion for wine, vineyards and viticulture. The first vines were planted on the Devlin's Pound site in the early sixties, and the vineyard named Glen Devlin in tribute to the local 1800s rogue: Irishman Paddy Devlin.

Director Rob Byrne's vision is to bring together a family winemaking business dedicated to producing purity and value in the glass for our customers, using fruit sourced from the various family vineyards. In 2005, Rob's daughter Petria joined the business, and assists in all marketing and label design, in addition to handling all aspects of production and administration.

Fellow Director Terry Byrne is a Roseworthy graduate, and has been involved in both vineyard ownership and management for over thirty years, with his persistent goal being simply to grow the best quality fruit whilst conserving water and energy.

Over the last couple of years, byrne vineyards has diversified into the dual streams of production – incorporating both our own branded product and a tailored wine capability, with the Byrne family involved at every level of the business.

Our Story - In the Spotlight

In the office the other day, we started talking about the vines. And 2012. And climate predictions. Which can all only mean one thing – gearing up for Vintage 2012.

The storm early November was less than ideal, and has caused considerable damage to properties around the Riverland. The SES has been out in force helping the clean-up, but we are yet to see if the storm will have any impact on the upcoming vintage.

Clare is looking good at the moment, and we have high expectations for our precious vines. Terry has been burning a trail from the Riverland to Clare and back again, keeping a careful eye on the soil and the vines, and we are in good stead for Vintage 2012.
