The Rogues Gallery

Dec 2011

We have welcomed Bonnie and Clyde to the fold!

Our new label Criminal Minds has been released, just in time for Christmas silliness. Bonnie is a Clare Valley SSB, and Clyde is a Riverland/Clare Shiraz, both just waiting to slyly tempt you away!

And perhaps next year we may have some friends to join our Rogues Gallery...

The new home

Nov 2011

We are all settled in to our new digs in Norwood, and we are planning to celebrate the fact with a launch of the rebranded Byrne Vineyards.  A few drinks, have a chat, try some of our new labels, and above all, an enjoyable afternoon.

Events

Oct 2011

There are so many wine shows and festivals around the world each year, and we can’t attend all of them - unfortunately!  So we have Adelaide’s Cellar Door Festival (www.cellardoorfestival.com) coming up early 2012, and Danny and Louise just got back from a quick jaunt to the Wine for Asia show in Singapore.  Our Thomson Lookout Ridge Chardonnay 2010 took a gold at the show, the Thomson Old Pumphouse Shiraz 2010 a silver, and the Thomson Estate Back Blocks Clare Shiraz 2010 a bronze, and the crowd were captivated by the blonde locks of Louise as she accepted the awards on behalf of Byrne Vineyards!

There were countless meetings, and a strong response to the wines, and the sustainable, family approach to quality winemaking.  We look forward to the Asia Pacific region going from strength to strength for Australian wine as a whole, and – of course – Byrne Vineyards in particular!

"Top 100 New Releases: 90 points, four stars ... Big, gutsy and cellar-worthy."

A big, super-ripe Clare shiraz which narrowly avoids jamminess, but comes down on the side of succulent blackberry fruit and baroque opulence. The structure is provided by an ample supply of firm tannins. Big, gutsy and cellar-worthy. (10 years)

"91 points ... Last year's release of Thomson Estate shiraz was a smashing bargain."

And this release is pretty good too. It's stuffed with blackberried, cranberried fruit flavour and while there's a bit of bottle stink, an hour or more in the decanter brings forward delicious highlights of woodsmoke and mint and walnuts. It feels plush on your tongue and while it's hardly sophisticated, it's rich and satisfying and very easy to like. Once again the value rating is high.

"It offers richness ... and the length and drinkability are top notch."

Interesting wine this one and after the initial oaky shock of smelling it subsided, I decided that I really quite liked it. There's something of the Rioja Gran Reserva about it - that obvious come-hither oak combined with a smooth pliant texture...

There's a fair old blast of peppermint and Playdoh "sexy time" oak over blackberry and cherry fruit with a spicy saucy aspect - take no prisoners here. Medium bodied with a beautiful supple texture and fresh sweet fruit that quite makes me forget the somewhat brutal oak treatment, although admittedly it does also impart a nice savoury character to the wine alongside those chocolate cake flavours. It offers richness with no heat or heaviness and the length and drinkability are top notch.

I think that Singapore might just like our wines...! With three wines submitted for the Wine For Asia Show, we walked away with three medals – a gold for the Thomson Lookout Ridge Chardonnay 2010, a silver for the Thomson Old Pumphouse Shiraz 2010, and a bronze for the just-bottled Thomson Estate Back Blocks Clare Valley Shiraz 2010.

A great result, it just added to the growing interest in our wines and our people in Asia.

Have you seen The Adelaide Review Hot 100 SA Wines magazine yet?! That's our Thomson Estate Back Blocks Clare Valley Shiraz 2010 in the 'Fruit Forward and Full' class. A classy follow up to the much lauded 2009 Thomson Estate White Label, we are more than happy with how this little number is looking.

"Fragrant violet-like aromas, red and blue plums. Fruit forward made in a polished, elegant, high-toned style, with characters of mandarin pith, blood orange, sweet rhubarb and spiced fruit mince."

Our 2009 Thomson Estate White Label Shiraz took out a blue gold at the Sydney International last year, followed up with a High Commendation for the Back Blocks Clare Valley Shiraz 2010 this year. Given the wine had been in the bottle for barely five minutes before it was submitted for judging, we were rather happy with the result!

With a long life ahead of it, this wine will only get better. Seriously elegant fruit, a side of Clare eucalypt and structure to burn.
